Postiz vs Zernio: The Comparison Neither of Them Will Write

· AI Tool Reviews

Here is something strange about Postiz vs Zernio. Postiz publishes comparison pages against a long list of competitors. Zernio publishes comparison pages against a long list of competitors. Both of them compare themselves to the same rivals. Neither has written a serious head to head against the other.

That is not an accident. These two tools do not really compete for the same buyer, and both companies know it, which makes the comparison awkward to write when your goal is winning a switch.

I sell neither one. I have no affiliate relationship with Postiz or Zernio and no business reason to prefer either. So here is the comparison, including the part where the honest answer is "you are asking the wrong question."

One conflict to state plainly: Blotato is a client of mine, my account there is comped, and I mention it once near the end because it is what I actually use. Links to it are affiliate links. Everything about Postiz and Zernio below is unaffiliated.

Read the "what it is" row before anything else, because it explains every other row. One of these is an application you run. The other is infrastructure you call.

They Are Not Actually Competing

The clean way to see this: Postiz has a user interface as its product, and Zernio has an endpoint as its product.

Postiz is a full scheduling application. Calendar, team members, approvals, a place to sit and plan a week of content. You can self-host it free on your own infrastructure or buy cloud plans at $29/month for 5 channels, $39 for 10, $49 for 30, or $99 for 100, all with unlimited posts.

Zernio is a REST API and a hosted MCP server. Your first 2 accounts are free with no card, then $6/month per account for accounts 3 to 10, $3 for 11 to 100, and $1 past 101. There is no meaningful "using Zernio" experience for a non-developer, because the product is the API.

So if you are a marketer who wants to plan and schedule posts, Zernio is not a candidate. If you are a developer wiring publishing into an app or an agent, Postiz's calendar is irrelevant to you. The overlap is a narrow band of technical solo operators who could genuinely go either way, and that band is who the rest of this post is for.

Where the Pricing Actually Diverges

The units are different, which makes headline comparison useless. Postiz counts channels per plan tier. Zernio counts individual connected accounts on a graduated curve.

At 5 connections, Zernio costs $18/month against Postiz cloud at $29. Zernio wins.

At 30 connections, Zernio costs $118/month against Postiz cloud at $49. Postiz wins, and it is not close.

The crossover sits somewhere around 10 to 12 connections. Below it, per-account pricing is cheaper. Above it, tiered plans pull ahead and keep pulling ahead. If you are anywhere near that line, count your real connections rather than trusting either company's example numbers.

And if you self-host Postiz, the subscription goes to zero and the comparison changes completely, which brings us to the real trade.

The Trade Nobody Puts in a Table

Self-hosted Postiz is free in dollars and expensive in attention. You own the platform app approvals, the OAuth token refreshes, the version upgrades, the backups, and the monitoring. The worst failure mode is silent: a post that does not publish and does not tell you.

Zernio is the opposite. You own nothing operationally and you pay per account forever. Somebody else gets paged when a platform changes its API.

I went deep on this trade in my post on the maintenance math, because it is the single most underestimated cost in this category. The short version: price your own hour, then decide.

Read Both Companies' Comparison Pages Skeptically

Since neither will write this comparison, you will end up reading their pages about other tools. A caution from doing exactly that.

Zernio's marketing runs a claim about having 40x faster rate limits than a competitor. I checked it against the documentation and it does not hold up. The figure it divides by does not match the competitor's published limit, and it does not even match the number in Zernio's own FAQ further down the same page. I showed the arithmetic in my fact-check of that claim.

That does not make Zernio a bad product. It makes its comparison pages a bad source. Same instruction applies to every vendor page you read on this topic, and to this one: check the primary documentation yourself.

Which One Should You Pick?

Pick Postiz if you want a calendar and a team workflow, you already run infrastructure and self-hosting is nearly free for you, you need more than about a dozen connections, or you want to modify the tool because open source lets you.

Pick Zernio if you are building software rather than using an app, you want zero operational burden, you have fewer than ten connections, or you need ad network management alongside organic publishing.

Pick neither if what you actually want is for something to write the posts. Both of these move content you have already created. Postiz has AI assist features in its cloud product, but neither is built as a content generation engine.

The next sentence mentions a tool I have an affiliate relationship with and that is a client. Full disclosure here.

That third case is where I landed personally. I run Blotato because I want an agent to write the post, make the image, and publish it in one conversation rather than orchestrating a writing service and a publishing service separately. That is a different job than either tool here is doing, and if it is not your job, it is not a reason to choose it.

Ryan's Final Thoughts

The reason neither company wrote this page is that the honest version does not produce a winner. Postiz and Zernio are answers to different questions, and the comparison only gets interesting for the small group of technical operators sitting between them.

If you are in that group, the decision comes down to one question: do you want to own a server or a subscription? Everything else is detail. Own the server and Postiz is excellent and effectively free. Own the subscription and Zernio removes an entire category of problem from your life at a price that is fair below ten accounts.

What I would not do is let either company's comparison pages make the choice for you. At least one of those pages is running a number that its own documentation contradicts, and that is a good reminder that on this keyword, everybody writing has something to sell. Except, on this one, me.

Postiz vs Zernio FAQs

What is the main difference between Postiz and Zernio?

Postiz is a scheduling application with a calendar and team features that you can self-host or buy as cloud software. Zernio is a developer-first REST API and hosted MCP server with no real end-user interface. One is an app you use, the other is infrastructure you call from code.

Which is cheaper, Postiz or Zernio?

Below roughly ten connections Zernio is cheaper, at $18/month for 5 accounts against Postiz cloud at $29. Above that Postiz wins clearly: 30 connections costs $49/month on Postiz cloud against about $118 on Zernio. Self-hosted Postiz costs nothing in subscription at any scale.

Can you self-host Zernio?

No. Zernio is a hosted service only. If self-hosting is a requirement for you, Postiz is the option of these two, since it is open source and designed to run on your own infrastructure.

Do both Postiz and Zernio work with AI agents?

Yes, both ship MCP servers that agents like Claude Code and Codex can call. Zernio's is hosted, which means less setup. MCP support is now common across this category, so it does not differentiate them much on its own.

Does Postiz or Zernio write content for you?

Neither is built as a content generation tool. Postiz includes AI assist features in its cloud product, and Zernio is explicitly publishing infrastructure that moves content you have already made. If you want posts and images generated, you need a separate tool upstream.

Why is there no official Postiz vs Zernio comparison?

Because they mostly serve different buyers. Postiz targets people who want a scheduling app they can control, Zernio targets developers embedding publishing into software. A comparison page works best when both tools are competing for the same switch, and these two usually are not.

Disclosure: some links in this post are affiliate links, specifically Blotato. If you buy through them I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Blotato is also a client of mine and my account there is comped rather than paid. I have no relationship with Postiz or Zernio and earn nothing if you choose either. I only recommend tools I actually use. Full disclosure.
