Death of WordPress: My WordPress Alternative for Marketers
The following article explains why WordPress is dying for marketers who run a site alone, and the WordPress alternative that runs this entire site instead.

- Claude Code or Codex does the building, loaded with skills.
- Astro is the web framework underneath.
- GitHub stores every file and every version.
- Cloudflare hosts it and deploys each change.

Is WordPress Dead? Not If You Count Websites
Let's be real about the numbers first. On September 23, 2026, W3Techs reported WordPress on 40.2% of all websites and 58.8% of sites with a known CMS.
Nothing that big is dead. And on camera I said the quiet part out loud: "I'm not saying WordPress is dead."
My exact caveat was about teams. With a lot of non-technical people editing and polishing content, a CMS like WordPress is still better set up for that job.
But those W3Techs numbers are a census of the whole web. They cannot tell you what to build your next site on.
So here is my actual position. WordPress is dying for the reader I write for: the marketer, solo operator, or small business owner running a site alone.
That reader never needed a database, a theme marketplace, and a stack of plugins. They put up with all of it because a fast, custom WordPress alternative they fully owned used to mean hiring a developer.
Astro Needed a Developer. Now the Developer Is an AI Agent
When I asked ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity about Astro vs WordPress in September 2026, all four raised the same objection. Astro is fast, they said, but it needs a developer.
That was true when a developer meant a person. For a WordPress alternative in 2026, the developer is Claude Code or Codex.
You still review its plan and check the result. The agent handles the code itself.

The real test is what happens when something breaks. In the video, my first push to GitHub failed with an error I did not understand.
So I pasted the whole terminal message into Claude Code. It explained the failure in plain English and handed me the one command that fixed it.
As I put it on camera, "A lot of this stuff is over my head." It did not matter, because I only had to describe the problem.
That is the whole shift. An error on this stack goes straight back to the same assistant that wrote the code, with the full project open in front of it.
The Dead End Most People Take Instead
Plenty of people who quit WordPress walk straight into one of two traps. When I checked on September 23, 2026, Google's own AI Overview for "WordPress alternatives" steered beginners toward Wix.
The first trap is the hosted site builder. Wix's own help center states plainly that a Wix site has to run on Wix's servers.
You traded plugin updates for a landlord. The site looks finished, but you cannot pick it up and move it.
The second trap is the vibe-coding platform: Lovable, Replit, Base44. My problem with them is where your context lives.
My agent runs on my own machine, so my skills, brand files, and SEO rules carry over to every site I build. In a browser builder, that context sits on their platform, you pay in their credits, and the tool is tuned for app prototypes more than content sites that have to rank.

Astro vs WordPress for a One-Person Marketing Team
Here is how Astro holds up as a WordPress alternative for the reader this post is written for, one person running the whole site.

The hosting side is the easy part. Cloudflare Pages says every plan, free included, comes with unlimited sites, requests, and bandwidth, and the free plan allows 500 builds a month.
Every change also leaves a trail. When Claude Code pushes a commit to GitHub, Cloudflare turns it into a new deployment on its own.

Once You See the Light, You Don't Go Back
WordPress will keep running a huge share of the internet for years. It just stopped being the default answer for a marketer building alone.
Owning the files, skipping the plugin treadmill, and fixing problems by describing them is a better deal. And after you run a site on this WordPress alternative for a month, going back to wp-admin feels impossible.

What is the best WordPress alternative for a small business?
If one person runs the site and it is mostly pages and a blog, Astro built by Claude Code or Codex, stored in GitHub, and hosted on Cloudflare Pages is my pick. If you need a big online store or a team of non-technical editors, a hosted platform or WordPress still makes more sense.
Is Astro better than WordPress for SEO?
For a solo marketer running a content site, Astro usually wins on the technical side, because it ships static pages with zero JavaScript by default, so they load fast without caching plugins. Rankings still come from content and links, so a well-built WordPress site can outrank a sloppy Astro one. Astro just removes the plugin bloat that drags many WordPress sites down.
Can I use Astro if I don't know how to code?
Yes, if an AI coding agent does the coding. You describe what you want, review the result, and paste any error back in so the agent can fix it. You still need to be comfortable reading its plan and pushing back when something looks wrong, which is a marketing skill more than a programming one.
Why not just use Wix or another hosted website builder?
Because the site stays on their servers. Wix's own help center says a Wix site cannot be hosted anywhere else, so leaving means rebuilding. Some newer AI builders now offer code export, so check that before you commit. With Astro and GitHub, every page is already a file you own, and you can switch hosts or AI tools without starting over.
