Most people using AI in 2026 are still working without context. They paste the same instructions over and over, rebuilding preferences from scratch every session. That’s a slow, broken workflow.
Claude Skills fix that. A skill is a Markdown file that acts as an instruction manual for Claude Code. You write your style rules, output format, and preferences once. Claude follows them consistently every time.
I have 15 to 20 skills in my Claude Code setup. An anti-slop skill that catches generic AI phrases before they ship. An email newsletter skill that knows my exact voice. A social media skill that handles post formatting without re-explaining anything. Well-organized instructions, saved as Markdown files.
One thing to call out first: you need a paid Claude plan for Claude Code. I’m on Claude Max at $100 a month. Claude Pro at $17 a month caps out fast. That’s just the reality.
Method 1: Build a Claude Skill With No Existing Context
You don’t need existing work to create a useful skill. This method works from scratch.
Open Claude Code or Claude.ai and run a prompt like: “I need you to create a skill.md file for writing high-quality email newsletters in my writing style and tone.” The more specific the prompt, the better the output. If you have one example of what you want, paste it in. A sample email, a blog post, a social caption.
Also add Anthropic’s official best practices for creating Claude skills to your prompt. It gives Claude a framework to follow when building your skill file.
I used Opus 4.5 with extended thinking on. A few minutes later: a full Markdown file covering voice, structure, sign-off patterns, and banned phrases. Download it, drag it into your skills folder in Claude Code, and it’s ready.
The real power is refinement. If Claude writes an email that misses the mark, tell it what to fix and add: “Update this skill Markdown file going forward.” Claude shows you a diff and asks for confirmation before saving. Every fix improves the skill permanently. You’re not correcting one output. You’re improving the instruction manual for every future one.

How to Activate Your Skill in Claude Code
Once the file is in your skills folder, reference it in chat: “Write an email on the best AI tools. Use the email-writer-skill.md.” Claude confirms it read the file and follows those instructions for the session.
Method 2: Create a Claude Skill From an Existing Project
This method produces a much richer skill. If you already have a Claude Code project, a ChatGPT custom GPT, or a Google Gem with chat history and uploaded files, don’t start over. Use what you’ve already built.
The prompt: “Create a skill.md file for this Claude project using best practices. Use my chat history, instructions, and files in this project to help.” Add Anthropic’s skill documentation, set it to Opus 4.5 with extended thinking, and run it.
What you get back is noticeably better than Method 1. My email newsletter project had months of refinements, subject line data, and dozens of real examples. The skill Claude generated was far more detailed than anything it could have produced cold.

Method 3: Use a Skill Creator Skill Inside Claude Code
This is the method most people skip, and my favorite.
Inside Claude Code, I have a folder called system skills, separate from my main skills folder. It holds three files: a troubleshooting skill, an MCP setup skill, and a skill creator skill. The skill creator does exactly what it sounds like. It builds other skills.
Anthropic offers their own version in the official Claude Code GitHub repository. Grab it from there, or build a customized version like mine.
Here’s how it works in practice. Start a fresh chat in Claude Code and run a prompt like: “Use the skill-creator.md skill to create a new skill for writing email newsletters. Use my examples in the past email newsletters folder for reference. Name this skill email-newsletter-writer-demo and save it in my skills folder.”
Three things matter in that prompt: point to real examples in your file system, name the output file, and specify where to save it. When you give Claude Code that level of specificity, it does exactly what you asked. The new skill file appeared in my skills folder automatically, named correctly.
The advantage over Methods 1 and 2: everything stays inside Claude Code. No copy-pasting between windows, no downloading and dragging files. Claude writes the skill, saves it to the right folder, and it’s available in your next chat.
